Robert Harrop Limited Edition Silurian (1970) – In Hand Review

“He talks of sharing our planet with apes!  I shall wipe them out!”

Work on an experimental nuclear reactor is being hampered by inexplicable power losses and by an unusually high incidence of stress-related illness amongst staff.  Built in a cave system at an underground research centre at Wenley Moor, UNIT and the Doctor are called in to investigate.

Exploring the cave system, the Doctor discovers it to be the home of a group of intelligent reptiles, termed Silurians, who went into hibernation millions of years ago but have now been revived from power taken from the new research centre!

The Silurians made their first appearance in ‘Doctor Who and the Silurians’ in the phase of the Third Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee.  The Silurians are prehistoric and scientifically advanced reptilian humanoids who predate human history.  They retreated underground and went into a self-imposed hibernation to survive what they believed to be a devastating ecological disaster, but was in fact the Moon coming into the Earth’s gravitational pull.

Robert Harrop has chosen another classic monster to join their line-up, this time from 1970.

The Silurian, just like all the other figurines in the range, has been sculpted with great detail. The varying textures give the character appeal, especially on its thighs where the roughness of the scales changes to a smoother skin. It is a great figurine to hold and the sculptor has certainly captured the character with great success.

As with each of Robert Harrop figurine the Silurian is hand painted. As the sculpt looks very natural and organic, it has been carefully enhanced with various paint effects to bring out the creatures earthy tones. Particular detail has been given to the Silurian’s head piece with varying shades of green applied to enhance key features. The quality is amazing and credit must be given to the team behind the figures.

As usual, the figurine is packed in a sturdy cardboard box with polystyrene insert to protect the figurine during transit with an individually numbered with a foiled silver sticker on the front. The Silurian only has a run of 500 figurines worldwide, so act quickly if you want to add this figurine to your collection. I am sure with awareness to the range growing then this will sell out soon!
